The Road Ahead Exhibition

The
Australian Trucking Association's Road Ahead travelling exhibition is
a state-of-the art semi-trailer filled with interactive displays about
road safety and the trucking industry. Since it started in 2008, more
than 65,000 people have visited the exhibition.
The Road Ahead aims to improve road safety awareness through the use
of electronic minigames, simulators and displays. Compete against other
visitors through ten road safety games, or try loading a semitrailer with
the swipe of a finger. Information about the trucking industry and its
importance to Australia is also shown in colourful displays.
The Road Ahead will be at the Nowra show opening to closing on both the
10th and 11th of February, and invites all showgoers to drop by during
the day to have fun and discover something new about the Australian trucking
industry.

CATTLE PARADE IN 2012
Once again in 2012, the Nowra Show Committee will be holding one Cattle
Parade at the Nowra Show.
The Cattle Parade will commence at 2.00pm on Saturday of the Show.
The Cattle Parade is an opportunity for spectators to see all at once
many of the exhibits that have competed in the various sections of the
show.
There will be Cattle, Horses, Farm Machinery, our Showgirl entrants and
of course Ron McKinnon and his team of Bullocks along with a range of
vehicles that will be on display at the show.
Commentators Gerry Coonan and Ralph cook will keep the crowd informed
of the Champion exhibits from each section.
Encouraging competitors in the sections to fit this into what is already
a very busy day at the show for them is not always easy.
We are asking them to present their animals not only for their classes
but also for this spectator oriented display.
Be sure not to miss the Cattle Parade at this year’s Show!
SIDESHOW ATTRACTIONS
The sideshow attractions are of course a major draw card of any show
and Nowra Show is no different.
To a lot of people a Country Show is The Ferris Wheel, Zipper, Hurricane,
Cha Cha, Merry Go Round, Clown heads, Knock ‘em Down, Fairy Floss, Dagwood
Dogs and of course, the vital Showbags.
The Australasian Showmen’s Guild considers the Nowra Show to be one of
its major yearly events and as such our Show attracts some of the best
sideshow rides and amusements rarely seen out of city areas.
The Nowra Showground is an alcohol free zone at Show time, and this coupled
with strong security and police presence has ensured that all areas of
the show are safe for families and young people.
Side Show Alley is a tried and true formula for fun for all the family.
Show Mow Lawnmower Racing
Grass roots racing may well describe lawn mower racing. With a set of
regulations to guide what can and cannot be done to your favourite mower,
all can enjoy this exciting form of motor sport, safely and affordably.
Pre-loved ride-on mowers are found cheaply, then stripped, repaired,
painted, and modified where allowed and away they go.
Safety is of paramount importance; so mowers are equipped with items
such as ignition cut out lanyards, throttle return springs and fire extinguishers.Drivers
must wear long sleeves, leather footwear, gloves and approved helmet.
To encourage Juniors and family participation there are classes for Juniors
and Seniors, and many women are showing a keen interest in racing.
There is an exciting new class on the scene called “Super Modified”.
These mowers are heavily modified, and are powered by small motor cycle
engines. With superb Showground arenas to run on, the Super Modified’s
should be exciting to watch.
The organising group, called SHOWMOW Racing incorporated can be seen
at Nowra Show on the added area on Saturday from midday.
Look for their display and talk to the folk about how you too can get
involved.

Pigeon Racing
Pigeon Racing is the sport of releasing specially trained racing pigeons,
which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance.
The time it takes the animal to cover the specified distance is measured
and the bird’s rate of travel is calculated and compared with all of the
other pigeons in the race to determine which animal returned at the highest
speed.
The winner of a pigeon race is the bird with the highest velocity.
Shoalhaven Pigeon Federation will be displaying racing pigeons that competed
in the Grand National Race on 17th September 2011.
The Race between Coffs Harbour and Ulladulla covered a distance of 620
kilometres.
First place was awarded to Paul Edwards, Ulladulla, flying time 9 hours,
22 minutes, 32 seconds at a velocity of 1071.37mpm. Second to C&L Hickey,
Ulladulla, 1046.30 and Third to Jeff Formosa, Nowra, 1010.09.
Come and see these remarkable birds at the Show.
Scarecrow Competition
New to the show this year, it’s time for the juniors to show their talents
and scare the crows, come down to the added area during the show and witness
the skills of our youth in our scarecrow competition with the major prize
aimed at promoting little green thumbs with a vegie garden setup and ready
to go as our major prize, check the website for entry details.
2012 Nowra Showgirl Competition – Celebrating 50 years
2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition
at a state wide level.
The Nowra Show Society has chosen to celebrate this special occasion
by holding a reunion for past Nowra Showgirls during the 2012 Nowra Show.
The Showgirl Competition, which commenced in 1962 at the Royal Easter
Show, is not a beauty pageant but aims to find a young female ambassador
for rural NSW.
Over 500 young women enter the Competition annually throughout NSW and
are judged on their interest and knowledge about rural Australia, as well
as confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, presentation
and speech.
Candidates are also asked to demonstrate knowledge of their local community,
National and political issues that impact on Australians.
Since the start of the Nowra Showgirl competition, the Nowra Show Society
has been proud to send 5 finalists to Sydney and has helped many more
young women gain self-confidence and valuable life skills as a result
of the many experiences the competition offers.
Being a Showgirl means being involved in your local Show; presenting
prizes, sashing of livestock, speaking with media and generally being
in the public eye. The announcement of the winner of Nowra Showgirl is
a major attraction to our Show and the winner will be announced on Saturday
evening 11th February at 8pm.
The 2012 Nowra Showgirl will represent the Nowra Show Society at the
Zone 2 final to be hosted by the Kiama Show Society on 10th March.
The young woman chosen as The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl will act as
an ambassador for rural and regional NSW. Her role will involve many official
and informal duties, both at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, NSW Shows and
during her travels interstate and overseas.
Prizes for 2012 State winners include:
• 1st place Sydney Royal Showgirl – Cash prize totaling $10,000

Mini and Full Trotters
The trots will again feature at the Show on Friday 10th and Saturday
11th evenings
Over recent years the sport has suffered in interest and Harnes Racing
Association of NSW has permitted some showgrounds to host trotting events
where it is deemed to be safe.
This
is also an effort to bring more interest into harness racing.
Historically, the Nowra Show had a full program of trotting events and
at one time the showground was the only trotting track in the town and
regular trotting meetings were held there.
THe races will be limited to 5 horses per race with standing starts and
the track will be upgraded for the event.
At one time Council were deciding to remove the trotting track but the
Show Society in its wisdom wanted it kept as the track is used for a variety
of uses during the Show.
Although betting is not permitted it will be an exciting spectical nonetheless
and to pick the winners of the heats and the final will be anyone's guess.
Roll up on Saturday night to once again revisit the Trots wiht our expert
race caller Gerry Coonan.
