The Nowra Show Society has held a very successful horse section program as part of the show throughout its history. In the early days of course horses were a vital part of farm life, being used to cultivate the land, muster the livestock as well as in harness to transport goods to market. Classes for horses in harness and the heavy horse events at Nowra Show provide a valuable reminder of the equine history of our district.
Today, horses also provide a recreational activity and hobby for many rural families and are also still used in mustering livestock on many properties.
The Nowra Show horse section includes classes for many different breeds of horse. Each breed is split into classes for ridden entries as well as led exhibits. There are classes for different heights of horse, age of rider, style of riding and skill level.
Horses that win at Nowra Show receive performance qualifications which enables them to enter the Royal Easter Show in Sydney.
The Showjumping classes are very well supported by competitors and are always a crowd favourite. Nominations for entry are received for classes ranging from beginners to Olympic games level.
The Nowra Show Society is particularly focused on encouraging children and youth competitors at the show.
These events start with the tiny tot rider under 4 years, the children’s fancy dress classes and go on to include the pony club events, youth sporting events and Junior and Young Rider Showjumping classes.
The Horse section at Nowra Show takes place throughout both days of the show in centre ring.
