Wood Chopping

This year’s Woodchop event will again take centre stage at the Nowra Show over the years providing exciting entertainment for the whole family.
Nowra Show’s competition is regarded as a prestigious event on the Woodchopping calendar attracting some of the best axemen in the world. Competitors travel to the Nowra Show from throughout NSW, Victoria, QLD, WA and New Zealand.
Visiting axemen are keen to attend our show as the wood used is the same as the wood prepared for the Sydney Royal Easter Show. This event allows participants to hone their skills and axes in preparation for the big event in Sydney.
Axemen male & female aged between 10 years and 80 years, compete in events representing various types of chopping and sawing, in an attempt to take home the large prizes on offer.
This year we are fortunate to have two world champions in attendance including Victoria’s Glen Gillam and New Zealand’s Adam Low. Adam will be managing the NZ South Island team.
The local contingent of axemen are always very competitive, with some having competed at the show for decades. The crowds are ever keen to cheer on the locals.
Since the opening of the woodchop pavilion at Nowra Showground in 1999, spectators have become far more comfortable at this most popular part of the Nowra Show program as they are able to sit under cover, sheltered from all the elements while they watch the action.
Boral Limited returns as major sponsor again this year. Boral operates the timber mills on BTU road and are a major contributor in the timber industry. We are delighted to have Boral on board and sponsoring the annual relay race between New Zealand South Island team and the NSW Team.
This year there will be three races, one on Friday evening, the second during the afternoon on Saturday and the final on Saturday night. New Zealand will be keen to challenge the NSW side. These events provide spectacular viewing and are not to be missed.
The program gets under way at 6.00pm Friday featuring heat 1 of the Walsh & Monaghan Valuers underhand handicap which is followed by Basha’s Interiors standing block event. Boral NSW v NZ Relay race 1 will follow with the evening closing with Nowra City Holden Butchers Block.
Saturday has a very full program commencing at 12.00pm continuing nonstop until approximately 7.00pm. Saturday’s first event is Heat 1 of the Ison & Co standing block handicap. Heat 1 of the Flavours Shoalhaven Underhand Handicap will follow.
The first heat of the A & D Treefelling handicap is at 1.30pm.
Two events not to be missed are the Toby Davis Memorial Underhand Championship event scheduled for 1.45pm and the Dunn & Williams Electrical & Air Conditioning South Coast Championship Standing Block event which is scheduled for 4.30pm. These events promise fast and furious action as all axemen start on the count of three (no handicaps). These two events attract the best axemen at the show.
